Why I am Tempted to Despair

A Facebook friend posts this photo

I agree wholeheartedly, but being a glutton for punishment, I post the comment below.  See what immediately ensues.

Speak the truth and be crucified by hateful fellow Christians.

Brother Kevin, Mr. Napolitano is correct: you are not a Conservative. You don't fit into Left / Right categories any more than you fit into Progressive / Conservative categories. No, rather you are intelligent. A Chestertonian Catholic to boot, possessing greater wisdom than even Aristotle. Despair not.

This is a good example of why I avoid Facebook...

You should take some time off from arguing with idiots to read that book I sent you.

Thanks, Tom. Deal, JVC. It's on my stack, which means I'll get to it soon.

Great. I hope you can get to it soon. It is the most cathartic book I've ever read.

I feel your pain. I had a big, drawn-out argument with another Catholic online once, where I tried to argue that the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were immoral according to the Catholic view of warfare. He wasn't having none of it. I think he accused me of being a secret leftist, at one point.
It was the same thing you're facing- people so wrapped up in their preferred ideology that they ignore the awkward bits of Catholicism they don't like.
